The body can go without food for weeks. But try going without water for a few days–even hours–and watch what happens! Serious problems will develop after a few days because the body needs water to flush out waste products from the kidneys. Water also lubricates joints and carries oxygen and nutrients to the cells through the blood. It plays a vital role in the process of chemical reactions in your metabolism and digestive system. Frankly, without enough water, your body cannot cool itself properly through perspiration. Without enough water, you could end up with excess body fat, a less than efficient digestive system, and poor muscle and skin tone. Eight to ten glasses of pure water should be consumed daily. This intake does not include coffee, tea, or sodas. The next time you reach for a Coca Cola or other similar beverage, try replacing it with a glass of water instead! And pat yourself on the back for taking good care of your body’s essential need for water.
