From Fats to Famous: Phil Sokolof

Who would have thought that a retired businessman would use his millions to start a campaign to educate Americans about cholesterol? Phil Sokolof, whose heart attack in 1965 sparked his interest in cholesterol, used his money to run ads and contact food manufacturers about the dangers of saturated fats. His series of ads culminated in a 1990 campaign to strengthen federal legislation requiring nutritional labels. Sokolof died in April 2004.
