Medical Tourism? A Passage to India

Because of its excellent yet low-cost private hospitals and surgeons, for several years India has been attracting foreigners from other countries in Asia, and from Africa, the Middle East, and even Europe and the United States. The cost of surgery and other services is minimal compared to American prices. A few years ago The Washington Post reported that an American patient paid $10,000 for heart surgery, and that included round-trip airfare and a side trip to the Taj Mahal.

Two of the medical centers offering state-of-the-art medical treatments include the Escorts Heart Institute & Research Centre in New Delhi and the Apollo Hospital chain, headquartered in Chennai.
