Mother and Child Health: A Woman Physician’s Perspective

At a panel discussion in Washington, D.C., last January, Dr. Monique Chireau, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University, listed the short-term and long-term risks of abortion to women.

Short-term: infection, excessive bleeding, perforation of uterus, incomplete abortion, death to the fetus and possibly to the mother.

Long-term: if the woman survives the abortion physically (the fetus, of course, does not), she still faces the real possibility of scar tissue, as well as chronic pain, depression, and anxiety.
